METROPOLITAN MINISTRIES’ MIRACLE PLACE

Preferred Pools & Spas is always looking for ways to help Florida and the overall USA community with our skills in pool design & construction.

On May 11, 2013, Preferred Pools & Spas took part in Metropolitan Ministries’ playground project for Blue Star Families, a non-profit organization that helps homeless kids. Sponsored by KaBoom! and Bank of America, volunteers who built the playground at Miracle Place well, attended the project at 2016 North Florida Avenue in Tampa.

The new playground is part of Metropolitan Ministries’ Miracle Place housing expansion, with 50 transitional apartments offered for homeless families.

Gathering in this photo were Zach Heiny, Morris Hintzman, CEO of Metropolitan Ministries, Rudy Heiny, founder and president of Preferred Pools & Spas, and The Honorable Mayor Bob Buckman Tampa, and Jake Heiny.

More About Miracle Place’s New Playground

“This playground is such a blessing to the children that call Metropolitan Ministries their home, although it’ll be their home for just a short period,” said Tim Marks, president of Metropolitan Ministries.

Metropolitan Ministries’ officers say that a hundred and fifty kids within the Promise Land early service education center will use the playground. “We’re excited to assist offer a place of happiness and fun for kids whose lives are in transition, ” said Bill Goede, bay market president, Bank of America. “This playground can function as a place for kids and families to play, learn and support each other. Our staff is excited about giving back to the community, and we’re happy to be here with members of our community to create a beautiful playground.”

Adds Rudy Heiny, president of Preferred Pools & Spas of Tampa, “First, I’d like to thank the 200 volunteers who gave themselves to build the playground for these kids in transition. Both of my sons and I felt that this was a significant project for the community, and we applaud the work and dedication of Metropolitan Ministries.”

Virginia enacted the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act (P&SS Act) to forestall the tragic and hidden hazard of drain entrapments and eviscerations in pools and spas.

About Virginia Graeme Baker:

In June 2002, seven-year-old Virginia Graeme Baker died after being stuck on a bathing tub drain because of its suction force. The drain’s suction was so powerful that it took two adult males to tug her from the drain. Graeme was a member of a community swim and dive team and had been swimming unassisted since she was three years old.

After being found underwater by her twin sister, Graeme’s mother, Cindy Baker, tried unsuccessfully to tug Virginia off the drain. Mrs. Baker perceived Graeme to be stuck to the bottom of the spa, almost as if tied down to it. The men eventually freed Virginia from the spa force, which broke the spa drain during the crisis. Graeme died from drowning; however, the real reason behind her death was available suction owing to a faulty drain cover.

Pool and spa house owners should have their facilities inspected by an allowed skilled engineer and install P&SS Act compliant covers. See www.Poolsafety.gov for an inventory of makers of certified covers.

As of December 19, 2008, all operational public pools and spas should have drain covers that meet the ASME/ ANSI A112.19.8–2007 customary in each drain/grate. Suppose a collection incorporates a single significant drain (other than an unblock-ready drain) or multiple drains three feet apart. The operator should either disable the drain(s) or install a second anti-entrapment device or system. This could be an automatic pump shut-off system, gravity system, Safety Vacuum Release System (SVRS), or suction-limiting vent system.

For more details about pool anti-entrapment devices, contact Preferred Pools & Spas in Tampa at (813) 247-7665.

After active and constant supervision, three significant pool safety precautions are safety drain covers, pool and spa covers, and pool alarms.
