ARCHITECTURAL FOUNTAINS FAQs

Below are some of the most general Frequently Asked Questions you may have related to building your pool. For FAQs related specifically to Residential Pools, Commercial Pools, Hardscape, or Architectural Fountains, please look at our pages on each of these services.

Decorative water fountains are standard architectural features in many areas of the USA, found in public plazas and malls, in front of government and office buildings and industrial plants, and inside and outside of private residences.

These parts include the pump, the water conduit (usually plastic tubing), and the water basin. Anything else you see in a fountain is there to disguise these parts or enhance the overall design. They usually include these details when you purchase your water fountain.

First, measure the diameter of the fountain spout. Multiply that number by 100. This calculates the gallons per hour, or GPH. If the fountain spout is 2 inches in diameter, then the fountain has 200 gallons per hour, or 2 x 200 = GPH.

To determine the volume of a pond or fountain in gallons, multiply its length by width by the average depth (all in feet) by 7.5. For a 300-gallon water feature of a type (explained below) that requires water circulation every two hours, you’d look for a pump with a flow rate of 150 GPH.

A good rule-of-thumb is to use a large fountain for a focal point and a small fountain for an accent. In his book, The Hot Garden, Scott Calhoun suggests a fountain should never be taller than 1/3 the height of your home.

Waterfall Weirs are often the perfect accent to a more formal indoor or outdoor water feature. These weirs produce a perfect sheeting effect and add sound and aeration to the water feature. True Pump carries waterfall weirs made from acrylic or stainless steel, available in sizes ranging from 12” to 60” wide.

Water fountains don’t use a lot of electricity. Less water and horsepower will reduce electrical consumption, but it’ll also lessen the visual effect of the fountain. Most water fountains cost less than $50 per month to operate several hours per day.

The pump at ground level acts as the source of vacuum and has a theoretical lifting capability of about 30 feet (It would lift 34 feet if it could create a perfect vacuum). Twenty-five feet is all you should design a centrifugal or jet pump to lift to have adequate water usage capacity.
